When does the Chinese New Year 2021 start?

The Chinese New Year, officially known as the Spring Festival or Lunar New Year, is governed by the Lunar calendar and not by the Gregorian. It begins with the second moon after the winter solstice, so it can start between January 21 and February 20. On this occasion, the Chinese New Year 2021 will be on February 12 and will run until January 31, 2022.

According to popular Chinese astrology, the Chinese New Year 2021 ends with the year of the Rat and the period of the Buffalo (or Ox) arrives, the second animal in the cycle. 2022 will rule the year of the tiger from February 1.

Chinese New Year 2021: Celebration Calendar

The celebrations usually last 15 days until the Full Moon arrives, but the holidays are the first seven. This year it starts from the eve (February 11, 2021) until the Lantern Festival (February 26, 2021). The 7-day Spring Festival holidays will be February 11-17, 2021.

During this time, families organize meetings in which many traditions are present. Among them, the banquet to attract abundance, the delivery of gifts and money in red envelopes so that good luck and protection are not lacking.

When the Chinese New Year begins, the sowing and harvesting and new beginnings are welcomed as well. Although this time is when it is still winter in most of China, it is a time to "wait for spring."
