They are a symbol of prosperity. The skyscrapers in China are a symbol of a booming economy, solid as the foundation of these buildings.
They house important financial and business centres.
China on top
Of the 128 buildings built in 2016 that are more than 200 metres high, 84 are in China. Another 23 are found in Asian countries such as Indonesia, South Korea, the Philippines and Qatar. In 2015, 114 towers were built, 62 of them in China.
In 2015, the construction of mega towers, buildings with heights greater than 600 metres, also increased. The towers considered “super high” are those that exceed 300 metres. Skyscrapers are defined as buildings of more than 200 metres in height.
The Shanghai Tower, the mega tower
One of those mega towers is in Shanghai, the largest and most populous city in China, a true global financial centre. The Shanghai Tower is 632 metres high, the tallest skyscraper in China and the second tallest in the world. It is preceded only by the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which is 828 meters high.
This building is composed of 121 floors in a cylindrical form which turns on itself as it rises. There are 9 vertical zones that converge around an atrium, a space that simulates a square. Commercial zones in the lower area, and in the upper area hotels, cultural facilities and areas for observation of the city, make up this spectacular skyscraper.
Next to the Jin Mao Tower and the Shanghai World Financial, the Shanghai Tower is one of the main financial centres of Asia. It displaced the Arab tower Abraj Al-Bait of 601 metres to the third place in the list of the highest buildings in the world.
Ping An Finance Centre
In 2017, the construction of the Ping An finance Centre, a 599 meter high building with 115 floors, was completed in Shenzhen. It is the second highest skyscraper in China and the fourth in the world. The continuation of the complex is planned, with a skyscraper of 293 metres in height and 51 floors, which will house hotels and offices.
CRF of Guangzhou
The Financial Centre CTF of Guangzhou is the third highest in China at 530 metres, and the sixth highest in the world. The West Tower became operational in 2010 and the East Tower in 2016. Its 111 floors house offices, apartments and hotels.
Shenzhen, a booming economy
Shenzhen has the record of buildings of 200 metres in height, eleven in total, completed in 2016. In second place, with six each, were the cities of Guangzhou and Chongqing.
From a fishing town, in a span of 40 years, Shenzhen became a financial and technological power. The impetus came from the reformist leader Deng Xiaoping, who in 1980 decreed a special economic zone. The decrease in restrictions on companies triggered the economic boom that these mega constructions show today.
In Shenzhen, Qianhai Financial Centre is under construction, which will integrate a complex of skyscrapers for offices. The Noble Tower was completed in 2005. Its 40 floors span 193 metres. The KK 100, 442 metres high, has a curved design similar to a natural spring, a symbol of prosperity.
Skyscrapers in China, among the highest in the world
Six skyscrapers in China are included among the 10 tallest buildings in the world. This list is headed by the Shanghai Tower in the second place; Ping An Finance Centre, in fourth; and the CTF in sixth place.
The Shanghai World Financial Centre at 492 metres is the seventh tallest skyscraper in the world.
The International Commerce Centre in Hong Kong is 484 metres high and is the eighth tallest in the world. The Zifeng Tower, in Nanjing, at 450 metres high occupies the tenth place.
